Growing up in the Workshop

Started Out Early

It’s winter, just before my fourth birthday. I clamber onto a metal folding chair with a scrap piece of wood in hand. Before my skinny fingers is the tearing blade of an old, rusty bandsaw. In my father’s makeshift woodshop down in the garage, I was given full autonomy over the scrap box. Filled with spoils, that cardboard box contained an endless trove of opportunity, just waiting for the next idea.

I was seven, maybe eight, years old and fascinated with outer space. I was going to be an astronaut and go to the moon just like Neil Armstrong. Not short of desire, there was was only one small problem; I did not have the resources nor tools to build a rocket ship. But I didn't let that slow me down. I reigned in my desire, ever so slightly, and decided to build a model rocket. For experimental purposes, obviously! With the model rocket ready, I just needed to acquire an engine. So, I grabbed a largest bottle-rocket firework I could find and took off to the back yard. As you might imagine, the 'engine' did not work as I hoped and destroyed my model rocket. Change of plans. I cut the grass a few times, saved the money, and purchased a proper model rocket engine. This time, the rocket blasted off, and with my feet still on the ground I chased the rocket to it's landing spot. While I had initially failed, and never made it to the moon, I did learn a lot down in the garage.

Nothing will work unless you do.

Maya Angelou

It was here, in my father's workshop, that I discovered and began to develop my philosophy on entrepreneurship, strategy, and design. I had resources, tools, and the desire to create. Together, these three elements can be transformed into something greater than the sum of their individual parts. Employing this simple formula, we have helped to catalyze countless endeavors.

I learned many things in my father's woodshop. But two stand above the rest. Measure twice, cut once. And failure is simply part of the process.
