Headed West

We’ve packed up the stagecoach and are seeking out a little oasis in the desert.

We are tired exhausted! The last three months have been hectic. Actually, the last three years have been hectic. A quick recap: merged Neil’s previous company with another agency, began consulting independently, started living between two cities (NYC & ATL), meandered the U.S. for seven months (living out of our car basically), continued traveling for another year (by plane, mostly), settled back into just NYC for a year, and welcomed a baby boy into the family — yes we are now responsible for another human being. Those are just the highlights! And now we’re going off to college (Jen, not the baby boy) living between Phoenix and Manhattan.

A number of folks have asked what we’re up to now. Here’s the scoop. Jen has been accepted into the graduate program at ASU’s School of Sustainability, one of the top sustainability programs in the world at the most innovative university in the U.S. Last year while in Phoenix for business, Neil recommended Jen check out ASU’s sustainability program. After researching a number of other schools, visiting with a few, and considering a move to Europe (the new grandparents would likely not approve), ASU remained the top pick — Go Sun Devils. It is the only program to which Jen applied.

After a few nail-biting months, we heard back. Jen was accepted. And if you know us at all, we typically step into action fast. So, with a three-month-old in tow, we packed up most of our belongings into the stagecoach (leaving some furniture and essentials in the NYC apartment), and headed west.

A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless. We find that after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us.

Neil drove across the country with his father — what a week! Jen and Baker (earning his flight wings at an early age) joined shortly after. As we head into summer, the calendar is covered with travel. We’re thankful for a few weeks to settle into the new place before hitting the road yet again. Once August rolls around we’ll be stationary for a while, though Neil will be back and forth to NYC for work. In August, Baker will be seven months old and not lived in any one location for more than four weeks — he’s our little nomad!
